Cell Sites in a Wireless Network

Wireless networks do bring down the cost and hassles of long distance cabling; however, this technology has its own demands on quality infrastructure. Wireless cellular networks that serve a large number of customers in a coverage area are made up of a number of cellular sites. These sites are interconnected to each other to form a network that resembles the structure of a honeycomb.

Cell site construction is one of the most critical activities in setting up a wireless network, and there are many core and supporting considerations that have to be taken care of to ensure uninterrupted service. Cell site construction involves not just setting up permanent cellular transmission installations, but also maintaining a series of portable equipment that can help maintain the uptime of a telecom network.

Cell on Wheels: An Important Component of Wireless Networks

While the strength of a wireless network is the quality of its fixed cell site construction, it is also required to provide for a standby facility to manage coverage without any service hang-ups. That is where Cell on Wheels, also known as COWs, plays an important role.

 What is Cell on Wheels?

Cell on wheels are cell sites that are mobile in nature. It consists of a fully functional cell site construction mounted on the back of a truck or a trailer with a generator set that ensures power supply to the equipments even in the most remote regions. 

Cell on wheels are used mainly as stand-by equipment to ensure signal transmission in places where the main cell site is under maintenance or repair, or places needing temporary coverage, such as an outdoor venue or a remote emergency location where communication is extremely essential.

Wherever needed, a cell on wheels assembly can be deployed almost immediately. The truck with the COW can be parked in an area where the signal transmission is needed and the antenna can be erected in no time. Power is derived from the generators or taken from the nearest available power feed if so required.

Cell on wheels are deployed by telecom companies and are always on standby to manage any eventualities in the existing networks and for ensuring uninterrupted coverage to all subscribers.
